It started 20 years ago, at
the Waterloo Gun and Bocci Club with 20 teams, and
raised $13,000 for local literacy programs.
The location has changed to
Stockton Memorial Civic Auditorium, as many as 36
teams will compete and about $35,000 will be raised,
but otherwise, the Library and Literacy Foundations'
Trivia Bee remains the same.
With a theme of The Roaring
'20s, foundation members, with the help of
librarians, have prepared questions to ask teams of
three representing a variety of local businesses,
organizations and high schools.

Each paid $550 to compete,
with local businesses sponsoring the high school
squads, and the proceeds benefit local library and
literacy programs.
"This is really our primary
fundraising event," said foundation board member
Dana Bockstahler. "Our foundation was started to
support adult literacy. Twenty years ago there were
some government mandates that libraries had to do
more toward adult literacy. There needed to be a
fundraising activity to fund those programs. Our
focus is not that narrow, anymore. In addition to
supporting the library, we also support the Reach
Out and Read Program (for pre-kindergarten
children)."
The questions for the annual
event are as closely guarded as the envelopes at the
Academy Awards, but San Joaquin Delta College
American history professor Wesley Swanson, off the
top of his head, could name a number of subjects
that trivia teams may face with a theme of The
Roaring '20s.
