STOCKTON - You might find it hard to
believe, but based on the wide-eyed
reactions of El Dorado Elementary
third-graders Wednesday afternoon, two
synonyms for the word "cool" are "free
dictionary" and "free thesaurus."
Third-graders at El Dorado and 17 other
school sites in Stockton Unified and Lincoln
Unified received the free reference books
Thursday from the North Stockton Rotary
Club. You'd have thought they had been given
iPads and Xbox 360s.

"I'm going to show my dad," 9-year-old
Dreama Mills said when asked what she would
do with the books when she brought them
home. "I'm very proud to have a new
thesaurus and new dictionary of my own. I'm
really proud."
Theresa Shapiro and Jim Dugoni represented
the North Stockton Rotary at the El Dorado
giveaway. Shapiro could not stop smiling as
she prepared to distribute the books.

"Just to see the look on the children's
faces is completely worth it," Shapiro said.
Shaun Oliver, 8, said he was planning to
take his new books home and "see what words
I don't know and learn how to pronounce
them."
He
added, "I'm going to read it and my eyes
will be tired all day."
John Conger distributed dictionaries
and thesauruses to these
appreciative students and Woodrow
Wilson School.
