STOCKTON - The glitz and glamour of Hollywood would likely lose their shine if the films were made from poorly written scripts or if the actors couldn't read them.

So it made sense for the Stockton Library and Literacy Foundation to celebrate the movie industry during its 19th annual Trivia Bee with the theme Lights, Camera, Literacy.

Organizers said a record crowd attended the event, which included a silent auction to raise money for literacy programs.

"In good times and bad, the library serves as diverse a purpose as the people who use them," foundation President Brigid Welch told the hundreds of attendees at Friday's event.

The bee pitted a record 40 teams of trivia buffs dressed as Hollywood stars at the sold-out event in University of the Pacific's Spanos Center.

The basketball arena was filled Friday by characters from a large variety of films, such as the "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Alice in Wonderland" and "Dead Poets Society."

A Tom Cruise look-alike, Charlie Chaplin and the comedy duo of Laurel and Hardy also made respective appearances.

The first question of the night: What movie director does singer Lady Gaga reference in her most recent hit song "Bad Romance."

The answer - Alfred Hitchcock - was announced, and the Spanos Center erupted in applause. A T-shirt cannon rocketed a souvenir into the crowd.

Teams were awarded for best costume, best table decorations, best team name and the top prize - the Bee Bobble Head Award - goes to the trivia winner.

Friends of the Library was the winning team, scoring 65 out of a possible 90 points. The Record's trivia team tied with the community group the Bee-Dazzlers for second place with 64 points.

Friends of the Library team member Bob Scheffer said the team won thanks to his daughter Claire.

"She answered the Lady Gaga and "Twilight" questions," he said.

Of course, it didn't come easy. The competition was fierce.

"We wanted a triple crown," said the Neumiller & Beardslee law firm's legal secretary, Cheri Marcus, who was dressed as the Cowardly Lion from "The Wizard of Oz. "We've been in the bee every year, but this is the first time we've went all out with costumes and the table decorations."

Last year, the 37 Trivia Bee teams raised $60,000 for adult literacy programs and tutoring in San Joaquin County. This year's totals were not immediately available.

The county library was at the event promoting one of the programs the Trivia Bee proceeds helps fund: The Big Read.

Library employees John Esquivel and Paul Sevilla handed out 100 copies of Jack London's "Call of the Wild," this year's Big Read novel.
