ROTARY
DISTRICT 5220 FRIDAY FACTS
Friday Facts, April 14
Flooding in Our District
Newman Rotary has
been helping some people from a mobile home park near the river that was
evacuated due to flooding. The people are housed in the High School Gym, and
Red Cross and Salvation Army are helping in the effort. I will keep our
clubs informed as to what they can do to help. There also are some flooded
areas near Lathrop, but at this stage, the Lathrop Sunrise Club has not
become involved as a club.
District Membership
The latest report
shows District 5220 started the Rotary year 7/01/05 with 2,475 members, as
of March 31, 2006 we have 2538, for a net gain of 63 members. Meeting
Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar’s goal of a net 1 new member per club, and well on
the way to meeting my goal of a net 2 new members per club. Now is the time
to invite eligible members of our communities to join in the great programs
of Rotary. As PDG Nick Mascitelli would say, “Just Ask”.
Rotary Pride
The goal set for
Foundation Giving by me as a challenge to our clubs was $130 per member. I
am happy to announce that the following 11 clubs have exceeded my goal by
the end of February.
Atwater
Ceres
Gustine
Los Banos
Madera Sunrise
Manteca Morning
Modesto East
Newman
Oakdale
Sonora 49er
West Calaveras
I am proud of
these District 5220 clubs for their continued support of The Rotary
Foundation, they know what “Every Rotarian, Every Year” means. Now is the
time for all clubs to make sure this year’s contributions have been sent to
The Rotary Foundation, and check their individual club giving record on the
www.rotary.org
member access. It is not too late to make their goal.
RI
Vice President 2006-2007
RI President
Elect William Boyd has selected RI Director Jerry Hall (the Director from
our two zones) as Vice President of Rotary International for the 2006-2007
Rotary year. We had the opportunity to meet and be photographed with Jerry
when RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar made a visit to our District last
August. We should all be very proud of Jerry and Tasha for all they do in
Rotary.
Service Above Self Speeches
The student
speech final was held last Saturday, and the winners are 3rd
place, Rachel-Mikel ArceJaeger, 2nd place, Niko Plassaras, and 1st
place Susanne Pena of Gustine. Susanne will be giving her speech at the
District Conference during the Saturday lunch. We want to thank Supervisor
William O’Brien, and his Aide Bill Houk for helping arrange the use of the
Supervisors Meeting Chambers.
4
Way Test Speeches
After the student
speech final, we had the final for the speech contest for Rotarians with the
topic the 4 Way Test. President David Tygett, of Stockton Rotary, came out
as the winner. President David will be giving his speech at the District
