ROTARY DISTRICT 5220 FRIDAY FACTS

Friday Facts, March 3

District Conference

This year’s District Conference is fast approaching, April 28-30, and it is shaping up to

be a great event. Besides the fun of our 17 hospitality suites and the great fellowship, we

have the following:

RI President’s Representative PRIVP Frank C. Collins, Jr. and Celia from Hartford, CT.

Frank is not only a past RI Vice President, he currently serves as an RI Representative to

the United Nations, as well is on the committee to monitor Rotary E-Clubs. What an

opportunity to learn new things about Rotary.

Dan Miller and Judy, from Oregon is a polio victim who has not let this crippling disease

stop him. You will hear his inspiring story to kickoff our session on Saturday morning.

Friday features a brief opening session and then a 5-hour tour of beautiful Yosemite

Valley, complete with a box lunch and a tour guide. The group will return to the Tenaya

Lodge to the dueling hospitality suites, and then a Mexican buffet with a mariachi band.

RI Director Jerry Hall and Tasha from Reno, Nevada will be with us for the entire

conference and you will hear him a couple of times during the conference.

Saturday will see the Club Presidents and Presidents-elect help with the very impressive

flag ceremony. After the flag ceremony, we will honor Rotarians who are also veterans,

they will be asked to stand and be presented a special pin. Our annual business meeting

will address some serious questions and all clubs should be represented.

President Liz Hosmer of Ceres Rotary and ADG Doug Scott of Arnold Rotary are in

charge of our awards ceremony on Saturday afternoon. With these two dynamos working

on it, you know we will have a great one.

A Black Tie optional Governor’s Ball will be Saturday night, and will feature Rotary

Pride awards for an individual and a club. We will have a dance with a live band.

On Sunday morning, we will be remembering District 5220 Rotarians who have passed

away during this Rotary year. PDG Dorothy Bizzini of Atwater Rotary will be in charge

and if your club had deaths of Rotarians please contact her and give her the information.

For those not yet registered, go to www.rotary5220.org and download the form from the

home page. See you at the District Conference.

Salida Rotary

Salida Rotary is the first club in the District to complete and submit the form for a

Presidential Citation. RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar wants to recognize

effective Rotary Clubs who meet the criteria, which virtually all of District 5220 Clubs

would do. The Presidential Citation form for applying can be downloaded from the

www.rotary.org website under 2005-2006 materials. The completed form should be sent

to me for signature.

Columbia Matching Grant

I received a challenging International Service Project from the Rotary Club of Bogotá-

Chico, Columbia, D4290 when I was in Ecuador in January. The club is looking for a

primary sponsor of a mobile dental clinic. The dental chair will be mounted on a truck.

All of the dental equipment will be a permanent part of the unit too. Any D5220 Rotary

Club interested in this matching grant project should contact Mel Hansen for details.

The deadline for submitting matching grants to the Foundation Staff is March 31, 2006.

This is very critical if your club is planning on being the primary contact for a matching

grant this Rotary Year.

There are several D5220 Clubs looking for additional financial support for their matching

grants. If your Club is interested in being a contributor this Rotary year, contact Mel, our

Grants Chair, for more information.

2006 PETS

As you receive this week’s Friday Facts, 2006 PETS will be kicking off in San Jose.

DGE Bob Hobbs along with the other 8 DGEs of Far West PETS will be welcoming their

Presidents-elect. DGE Bob will be responsible for this great training session. What makes

Rotary special is the required training to assume leadership roles. Our organization is far

ahead of any other volunteer organization that I know of. The Clubs’ Presidents- elect

should come back to the clubs with a new sense of “Rotary Pride”.

Awards Binders

Yesterday was the first day of the 2006-07 awards period for District 5220 Rotary Clubs.

The 2005-2006 binders should be completed and sent to PDG Phyllis Nusz. Phyllis and

her committee will select the best of the clubs in the District based on what is in the

awards binders. I will be doing awards for 2006-2007 Governor Bob Hobbs. His awards

binders will be judged for the period Mar. 1, 2006 to Feb. 28, 2007.
