A night full of
character
Trivia
skills put to test while raising funds for
children's literacy programs
STOCKTON - In the
spirit (or ghost) of reading, hundreds of ghouls and goblins came out on
Friday the 13th. And they all convened Friday night at the Library and
Literacy Foundation's 18th annual Trivia Bee at the Stockton Memorial
Civic Auditorium.
North Stockton Rotary
was a major sponsor, (March is Rotary Internationals Literacy Month),
and Judy Lovett, Chris Hunefeld and Sami Khoury tried to defend NSR's
13th place finish from last year. NSR also had a full table of
supporters, members, family and friends. Way to GO!
Dressed in costumes of
mystical characters, 35 teams participated in the foundation's Trivia
Bee, the foundation's primary fundraising event, which was themed
"Monsters, Mysteries & Magic."
The winners
First place: Friends of the Stockton Public
Library
Second place: San Joaquin County Public Health
Services
Proceeds from the event
support the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library and the
foundation's literacy programs, including adult tutoring and the Reach
Out and Read program, which provides thousands of books each year for
pediatricians to distribute to children.
Friday's
event also helped kick off Stockton Reads, a citywide reading challenge
in which Stockton residents register to read and review books at
www.stocktongov.com/read through July 31. The challenge was started last
year in response to Central Connecticut State University's America's
Most Literate Cities study, which ranked Stockton last in the
university's two previous reports, in 2006 and 2008._small.JPG)
"Every
study shows that cities with a high degree of literacy have a lower
degree of crime," said City
Councilwoman Susan Eggman, (left), who promoted the challenge Friday.
More than 520 people
attended the event. Foundation members hoped to raise at least $60,000,
the same as last year.
"The community has
really come out to support the cause," said Shari Allen-Garibaldi,
president of the foundation. (below
