2010 Chess Tourney Pictures
December 4th & 5th,
at Pacific

I want to thank all of the members who participated with the chess tournament last weekend. The tournament itself went very smoothly and you guys were great crowd control.  Next year (?) I'm bringing a real sword.... and whose idea was it to put three attorneys on the same shift?

Anyway... thanks to President Wayne, Judy Lovett, Brett Jolley, Parvin Soleimani (who actually played with the first graders), Jim Dugoni, John Conger, Margaret Strader, Andy Chesley, Jane Kalfsbeek, Sami and Ryan Khoury, Dennis--keepmybloodpressureundercontrol--DelPaine, Jeff Kroll, and of course Tom Biglione.

We also received help from the Interact club.... Justin Toy, Carly Pinkerton and Kayla Wigley.

Thanks a lot everyone, you made the weekend much easier for me than I thought it would be.    Bill McDonald

Now I know famous chess coach Mark Dvoretsky considers the tactical skill of a chess player to include two main components - the combinative vision and the calculating technique. In his opinion, in order to develop one's chess imagination one should solve tasks aimed at finding (not calculating out!) a correct tactical idea. Being a practitioner, I was very pleased to find such an important section as Combinational motifs. When the players began to solve positions from the Combinational motifs section the number correctly solved increased sharply, this is because many of them had been solved previously. Naturally, to facilitate a variety in the training material there are subtle differences in the positions such as: changing who's turn to move and/or the flanks and colors of pieces. But what really bothers me is whether or not this hat really is good luck or not??

On December 4th and 5th, 2010 North Stockton Rotary sponsored the Northern California Scholastic Grade Level Tournament at the University of the Pacific.  The Tournament was open to aspiring chess masters from Kindergarten through 12th grade and the event drew over 280 contestants from Dist. 5220 and beyond to UOP’s main campus.

“We are thankful that we could promote this great event a provide a positive outlet for all of these young chess players,” said North Stockton Rotary President Wayne Hose. “I would also like to personally thank  North Stockton Rotary member Dr. Bill McDonald for chairing this successful event on behalf of our organization.”   McDonald received the club’s “Quiet Rotarian” award for 2010 which honors a member who demonstrates substantial Rotary involvement in a quiet fashion and normally does not receive recognition for his or her work.

In conjunction with members of Cal Chess Sanctioning body, Pres. Hose, Dr. McDonald, and NSR members Judy Lovett, John Conger, Sami Khoury, Margaret Strader, Tom Biglione, Jim Dugoni, Brett Jolley, Jane Kalfsbeek, Parvin Soleimani, and Chris Hunefeld staffed the event.
