North Stockton Rotary hosted the tenth annual northern California State Grade Level Championships held at the University of the Pacific campus, on December 1^st and 2^nd, 2007. This year, 376 elementary and high school players competed from Sacramento, Folsom, Roseville, Berkeley, Marin, San Mateo, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, Woodside, Cupertino, San Jose, Fremont, Tracy, Coalinga, and Stockton competed over two days the first weekend of December. They were accompanied by another 300 parents and family members and team coaches.

In addition to providing Stockton youth an opportunity to play in a scholastic tournament with top quality chess players, proceeds from this tournament are used to further chess programs in local schools and the Stockton Chess Club www.stocktonchess.com .

As this tournament continues to grow, we are better able to achieve our mission’s three objectives: 1) raise awareness of the value of chess playing to student learning skills in our local schools, 2) showcase our community to a growing group of visitors, and 3) generate funds to re invest in youth chess programs here in Stockton. We believe we are doing a better job of this in each succeeding year, and with your support we will continue to do so.
